Hmmmm.... since you chose to park this question in the Philosophy section I'm guessing you're looking for an answer in that sense. "Purpose", in that context, would seem to pre-suppose design and intent to anything (or everything), an assertion decidedly not proven. Even if you are asking about a shadow's function, then there's probably still some presumption of some kind of general thought-out design.

Anyway, it could be said shadows just... are. A physical & visual consequence of light rays being blocked or distorted by some object. That shadows provide relief from sunlight for passing creatures, and allow conditions where certain plants and insects can thrive, is a consequence of that, or part of the evolutionary consequences of that phenomenon.

Shadow is created when there is a presence of light, and an object solid matter that is not transparent is blocking a ray of light, the blocked ray of light will then take shape into a shadow.

But what is indeed the very purpose of a shadow? Shadow's purpose is simply to attest & prove the very presence of color, light & anything visible because of light. Without light there will be no shadows, and hence shadow obscure color, color will cease to exist without light and so as shadows. Shadows are easily elimininated or minimized through the presence of light directed into a shadow.

The purpose of a person's shadow is to remind them that they're really there and that they're not alone. Other shadows are a place to hide from the light.

Some believe that shadows are a representation of God's presence around an object; like a halo.

A shadow has no purpose, it is a result.

if you want to be quick about it, a shadow is your body jest blocking light ...................But let's go deep... a shadow is god way of letting you know that you are never alone. so all of those speeches, plays, and all of those important situation you were in and you thought it was jest you against the world, there was always someone right there with you. so in your darkest hour,in your gloomiest of gloomy days if you look hard enough you'll notice that you are not really alone.

Huh?

That would greatly depend. For me, personally, it is to provide relief from radiant heat and carcinogenic UV rays! ...During the hotter summer months, of course.

Ask the same question in about eight months; my answer will change...greatly.
