I have heard different opinions...my old coach used to make us show him our armpits, if we had hair, we could throw breaking balls...is that accurate or appropriate?

The reason for your coaches strange request is that throwing a curve ball requires a certain level of physical maturity to prevent permanent injuries to bones and muscles. There are differences of opinion as to the proper age from beginning of puberty to the end of growth.

Wait as long as possible, kids want to throw them at 12 but I plan I making my boys wait until they are at least 16. Proper development and arm strength are more important than taking a chance on a messed up arm.

I heard a very good coach/trainer say until a kid can throw a fastball in the 80s I won't teach him a curveball.

The best pitcher on my high school baseball team did not start throwing curveballs until he was 14.

My coach made us show if we had any chest hairs.
