I remember 1975 when gas was 50 cents a gallon. Lots of things go into this, but the biggest thing is demand. We drive cars that use more gas than they used to. When something is in demand, the price goes up. Gas was 50-70 cents a gallon through 1979. Everybody drove big cars that got 10-15 miles per gallon. Then OPEC starts cutting back on oil to the US and prices go up over a dollar. It hurt at first, but within a few years everybody started driving small cars that got 30 MPG. Therre was small demand for gas and the price went down to around 80 cents a gallon. Inflation brought it up over the years. The good news is that gas is a smaller part of your monthly bills now than it was in 1979.

"Earlier this year, a raccoon and an opossum wandered into two Southern California substations, causing a power-supply disruption that resulted in flaring at one refinery and an outage at another. With supplies in the Los Angeles market tight, the incident -- along with a host of other factors -- contributed to rise of a few cents per gallon in gasoline prices. "
I remember in the 70's gas was 50 cents a gallon
I remember rationing gas you could only buy gas on certain days depending on if the last number of your license plate was odd or even

I remember when gas was .79 per gallon for unleaded. Took like 10 bucks to fill my car up! MAN I miss those days!!
They are saying that MAY 15th there is going to be a "strike" where people are to NOT buy gas on that day...
Maybe whoever decides these rediculous prices will get the hint if most of America refuses to buy gas on that day and cause them to lose money...hmmm...note to self,,,don't buy gas on the 15th...
The only thing with gas prices in comparison to todays bills is that it is a major jump increase, not just .30 we are talking about but almost a DOLLAR increase!! The problem I have with that, is Americans are not making the EXTRA money to PAY for that jump, and the groceries are going up due to the gas price hike....EVERYTHING is affected, Cost of living is going up, but the paycheck stays the same...THAT's where I have the problem. When you live on a budget, that hurts.

Supposedly the price of oil, per barrel. And, it seems that they are having problems with oil wells(?). I remember gas being under a $1.00 gallon. What worries me is the sacrifices ( Meds, groceries, etc) people are making to afford gas. I realize we can cut our gas consumption some, buy driving less but in most cases we need to drive to get to work. I have eliminated most other automobile trips and it is still hard for me to afford the gas i NEED to go to work .

I remember when gas was $.079 a gallon in 1980 when I started driving. But that was regular gas (not unleaded) and there were a lot less taxes on it.

And dot coms were falling like leaves, and terrorists were traveling freely about the country planning an attack, and the NASDAQ was plummeting, and Californians couldn't turn their lights on.
Ah, the good ole days. Nothing like a little selective memory to make them seem much nicer than they actually were.

Gas prices keep rising. We keep driving. Maybe it's time we find a better/cheaper/renewable source to power our vehicles other than oil/gas?

It's kinda funny - since the dems have taken over congress, gas prices have skyrocketed. Anyone else notice that?
