I personally prefer Guild Wars (poor college student, the no subscription is a plus), but if you're willing to pay $12 a month to play, WoW is a hell of a game. You can play a 10 day trial of it at their website I believe.

They're actually hard to compare.
WoW is a more traditional MMORPG, its the game to beat right now. It has the largest subscription base, and a persistent world. There is a monthly fee to play, 13+ dollars a month, depending on how much you buy at once. There is one expansion pack that requires the original game to play, and they add content patches frequently with small additions to content.
Guild Wars is a more action based MMORPG. There are 3 games in the series right now, but you only need one to play, having more just adds more content. Guild Wars has no monthly fee. Everything in Guild Wars is instanced, so you can only venture out into the field with your own party. There is one more true expansion coming for the series; after that Guild Wars 2 will come out LATE next year.
I belive demo's are available for both (and I know WoW has one) so try before you buy!

Guild Wars is the better , although not an instance like WoW , but wayyyyyyy better graphics , drops are assigned , and it's based on skill not reaching level kajillion , the pvp in GW is awesome , some of the builds and skill it takes to pull off soem of the things is pretty amazing. . . and yeh the other 2 guys are right , the no subscription (how it should be) is a major plus . . . not knocking WoW to hell and back , because i've never really given it a chance , but then again , thats just how good guidl wars is =]
good luck , hope this helps xD

Runescape I don't really care for, the market is extreamly inflated and the graphics, not so good.
Guildwars I haven't really played much so I can't say anything bad, but their graphics are much better then wow. (I believe there is a reason wow has its graphics like they are, it has to do with the lag in pvp, there are games where its 40 alliance v 40 hord *also smaller games* and I think it would just be to much if they made the graphics insanly nice)
WoW has alot to do with community, you are pretty much forced to group with people and instance if you want the better loot, once you get a few regulars you group with, it makes the game alot funner. That and warlocks > all.

definitely not Runescape.. WoW is pretty good if you have 8+ hours a day to spend playing it.. that's what it takes to stay competative in WoW.. I haven't tried Guildwars..
Rappelz is a decent online game that's free to download and free to play.. they make their money by selling extra optional items for real cash, but you don't have to buy them..

Dragon Age II is extremely immersive, and outstanding gory. i ought to also recommend swtor (vast call wars the former republic). no longer as pussy because it sounds, there is about 20 instructions in all that are very customizable in turn. tremendous wrestle, and incredible freedom, the game international is damn tremendous. both surely a sort of video games are disks, and also have singleplayer good factors. Then there is Battlestar Galactica on-line. you've probable considered the advertisements. it really is loose with upload-ons you are able to purchase, it really is a browser interest and the pictures are more effective than maximum console video games(awesome). All of those are tremendous!

Guild wars, it has the best graphics, it is free once you buy the game, no monthly fees, and it has the most variety. It isnt a nonstop cartoon grind like WoW
