We've been together for years, I used to tell him I loved him,but he always acted funny and would say it back, but I don't even say it to him anymore...We haven't said I love you in years unless we are arguing and he will say "I love you i would do anything in the world for you"its seems so genuine, but I come from a family where we said it all the time, he however grew up without his mom she passed away when he was 5 could this be the reason?

Some families never show the love like others, some will say the I love you and others will show it in other ways. Anyway, words are useless unless there is meaning behind it, so if you know he loves you just be happy.

It's harder for some people to say those words. You grew up used to it and maybe he grew up never hearing it. I think it's hard for men to say I love you anyway. As women we say it more freely.

Some people find it hard to say the words but find it easier to show their love. Does he at least do that?

Talk to him and let him know you would like to know what you mean to him and not only when your having a fight. Some ppl do struggle to express themselves so try to help him.

I suggest that you start both being true to yourself, and also allowing him to be true to himself. Since you were raised to say you love him, say it, and say it whenever you feel like it. If he "acts funny" when you do, allow him to do so. Not your problem. Why he doesn't say it is irrelevant. If he doesn't want to, stop telling yourself that he should or that it's bad that he doesn't. You say it when you want to say it, and let him say it when he wants to say it.

Don't read too much into the fact that he doesn't say it as much as you want him to. Actions speak louder than words! Some people just have a problem saying those three little words.
