You need a special cabel called a "cross over" cable. It has two of the wires in it "crossed over" to reverse their signals. Normally the hub or switch would reverse those signals.

Once the cable is in place, you would have to manual assign an IP address to each computer. Then they would be able to see each other for file sharing - you can copy from one to the other. But this about all you can do. It would not be a "full" network.

What you are looking for is an Ethernet Crossover Cable. You should be able to pick one up at your local computer shop. Just make sure you realize that you are looking for a crossover cable, not a standard Ethernet cable (which requires a network device like a router/switch/hub).

I believe you could do it with a crossover ethernet cable connected between the network cards of each computer. Hubs are so cheap though .

Crossover cable! You also need to setup the IP's manually, because they will not connect automatically. Put them in the same network subnet, but dont give them the same IP.
