1. At a concert in England, with US servicemen at the concert expecting to hear country music away from home during the war as well as the English wanting to understand "Texas music" better, lead singer Nathalie Maines spat out that she was "ashamed that the President was from Texas". The two other girls apologized for her actions. The #1 song on the country chart that week? "Travelling Soldier" by the Dixie Chicks. Poor taste.
2. After the "sincere apologies", all three Dixie Chicks pose nude on the cover of Entertainment Weekly magazine. The only thing they had on was black paint spelling out controversial words. Were we supposed to take the apology seriously now?
3. Their latest album is basically all about the time since that fateful Maines spewage. The CMA awards embraced the rebellious nature of the girls much as they did Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard and Bocephus. However, at the real deal in October they pitched a shutout.
4. Record sales are down 45-50% across the board since the shoutout, though the concerts are selling still. Some stations are still mad at the "Confederate Floozies" and others are playing their older stuff like nothing happened. Toby Keith, who went #1 on July 4, 2002 with "Courtesy Of The Red, White and Blue", was really upset with the Dixie Chicks. He put out "American Soldier" (a cleaner-worded version of those feelings from the 2002 single) after their tirade and was proud to represent the military. Both sides are still mad at each other.

Controversy? they just said a couple of words about the war. I say them all the time. I guess if I went on national TV and aired my opinion about George W. something, it might cause a little noise, but the Dixie Chicks have one of the best bands around, and are open minded and very diverse. They ROCK.

Apparently they made a less than positive remark about George Bush's warmongering ways, which set them at odds with the traditionally highly conservative 'Country community'.
This could have easily cost them their career, had they not been as ballsy as they are- so much for the Land of the Free.
Sounds to me like something from the McCarthy era.

to long to explain but something like this. the chicks said some things about the president and the war, then Toby Keith was all like "hey you girls are unpatriotic" so they chicks wore shirts that said FUTK at their concert and the is the basics of the controversy. i think.
