I've been looking for a week's holiday in Greece for the past couple of months, and I still don't have a clue where to go!
Everywhere has such conflicting reports. First I thought Skiathos would be nice, but then I heard it's rowdy and bland. Then I thought about Halkidiki, but apparently that's even busier. Now I'm thinking Crete, but there are so many different options!
What I'm looking for is somewhere not too tacky, not crowded, with some nice sandy beaches and a bit of history - I don't mind popping on a bus or walking to somewhere interesting.
I preferably don't want to worry about a long transfer from the airport to the area either - anything under an hour would be good.
I'm travelling with my boyfriend. We're both in our mid twenties. We're not a big fan of rowdy families or the clubbing generation. Just want something nice! HELP!
Also, if anyone could provide links so I know who to book with, that would be fantastic. Thanks.

Greece is crowded with tourists by definition. Crete is a great choice, though. So is Rhodes, if you want some history. Anyway..... if you want to run from the crowds, I'd advise some beautiful, nice, quiet island in the northern part of the Aegean. Have a nice vacation you two!

The airport is in Athens. Make sure to spend a couple of days in Athens to visit the sites. After that, you either take the ferry or the plane and go to an island. In your case, I think Naxos would be a good choice. Great beaches, interesting monuments, but it's a big mountainous island, so you will need to hire a car if you want to visit all the interesting places. Otherwise, if you want something calmer and easier to go around, maybe you should prefer Paros. they are both on the same ferry line, Paros is 3 hours by fast ferry, Naxos is a bit more. You could combine both, if you want.
Another good option is Kos, but I strongly suggest that you fly there from Athens or from home. It is far from Athens. It has great beaches, an interesting archaeological site, a castle in the town, good food, etc. It is quite touristy, but it's big, so if you stay away from Kardamena and the night clubs it's perfect.

For a extremely quiet/non-touristy experience, evaluate Aldemar motel in the Ileias area of the Peloponnese. it really is on the sea coast, it really is a 20 minute rigidity to historic Olympia, and also you may do some exciting day journeys to previous medieval castles (Chlemoutsi, Methoni) and the Temple of Epicurean Apollo at Bassae. which contain visits to organic web pages and picturesque mountain villages, you should honestly fill a calm week. (FYI, there also are some effective motels in Olympia itself, even with the truth that no longer on the sea coast. i imagine Europa turned right into a good one, if i'm remembering the call wisely.) another places to think about (with good beaches and major historic web pages nearby): -Crete (historic web pages of Knossos, Phaestos, etc.), yet be careful no longer to %. a touristy area -Nafplio area (historic web pages of Mycenae, Epidavros, Argos, Corinth; also the Nafplio citadel)

santorini can be rather crowded but I cant assure you enough
how amazingly worth while it will be. Its a 30 minute flight from athens . the history natural beauty and wonderful restaurants
are just amazing. The town of IO is more reserved for romantic couples and far less crowded then Fira. Also the Island of Hydra in the Saronic gulf is not to be missed ,no cars, no mopeds, no Airport just boats and donkeys, or your own feet. The best thing is that its just a 90 minute flying dolphin boat ride from pireaus.

Honestly, your best bet would be to see a travel agent. You would be relying on someone who would want future business with you so you really couldn't get bad information. I hope this works out for you & you have a great vacation!
