In, Out, In, Out. lol!
I normally breathe through my nose as it dry your mouth breathing that way (through mouth). You may lose breath at first. I push through this and then get what called "Second Wind". When that comes, it totally cool, and you will feel like you can run all day.

Inhale through nose, so the air is filtrated and warmed before entering the lungs. Cold air can cause short breath and you don't want that during intense running. Exhale through mouth because that is the quickest way to dispel CO2 and lactic acid.

In nose, out mouth

good question I run track myself, the most effective way to breathe is inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth, that way your mouth doesn't get dry and remember (although it is hard) control your breathing and breathe deeply, as you get more in shape it gets easier
