There is an excellent website, www.allears.net, to help with planning the Disney tickets. It also has Universal info, not as much, but still pretty good. They have info on all the ticket options, dining, parks, etc. They also have a lot on the different hotels on Disney property and the advantages to staying on vs off property. This will help you to get an idea of what you need to buy. If you are staying on-site, I would call Disney or use their website. For flights, I book with Travelocity. I know of one legit discount Disney tickets seller, and that is www.mapleleaftickets.com.

Do you have AAA membership? If so, check there first. I've found that my AAA agent can often get the best rates.
Are you going for easy or inexpensive? You can often get better rates if you do all the leg work yourself - call Disney and get a quote, ask for quotes from several online and realworld agents, check for plane fares yourself. But it takes a lot of time, and you still may miss the best rate.
I tend to go the middle road and contact two or three agents. Don't be afraid to tell one agent that another gave you a better rate. Forcing them to compete is not against the rules.
If you want to do it all yourself, check websites like allears.net They often advertise specials.
Spend the extra $20 and buy a good guidebook. It will help you. (Don't be afraid to go to the bookstore, browse the lot and pick your favorite. I have never been in a bookstore that minded if you read the books onsite without buying them.)

We went to our local travel agency. She found so many package deals and we just picked the one we wanted. We were like you, we got the flight, hotel, tickets, etc. She made it so easy.

i think the cheapest and easiest way is through disney themselves at www.disneyvacations.com , because if you go through a travel agent you have their fees to pay too.
