Everytime I flush my toilet the water in the bowl fills up as it should. Then later when I go back, the water in the toilet bowl has almost disappeared. At this point I have to flush the toilet twice before waste is taken away.

I can think of two causes. One is that the trap in the bowl is cracked and allowing water to seep out and it goes down the drainpipe. Cure would be a new toilet. The other choice is a clogged vent pipe. Drains need air to operate properly. They get it from the ventpipe. If it becomes clogged (birdsnest, leaves etc) when another fixture is used, it causes a vacuum to be pulled on other traps in the house and sucks the water out. Have someone watch the bowl (when full) and someone else flush another toilet (best) or run water down another drain. If you see bubbles in the toilet bowl, it is the vent. You would need to go up on the roof (if safe) and look down the ventpipe with a flashlight. If clog is seen, remove what you can by hand and then flush with a garden hose.

Debra, Mine does that occasionally also. Your commode is not flushing properly because of an "Obstruction" in the lines. I Bought some Draino Type Liquid safe for Comodes and use it once a week in my Comodes and it has really helped. You can buy it at Walmart..
