According to the Daily Mail ()sunday) muslim veils are now banned in class. As a school govenor who is on exclusion panels I think the govt. should comment on other things! Girls with veils do not end up being excluded! The govt. should worry about Vicky Pollard types not girls with veils! I am not a muslim and do not think that muslim teachers should wear veils, but if kids are well behaved who cares if they wear veils.

I have no problem with anyone covering their head for religious reasons but the face is a different matter. Even when the mouth is not open, a teacher can get a pretty good idea whether a student has understood a question, is happy etc from facial expressions. I do understand that muslim and jewish religions are far more full on than Christian and much more part of their entire life and society. I respect that.

I do agree about the chav kids. They are ruining their lives - that's their problem but they stop other kids learning. I think it should be easier for schools to get rid of kids who are an absolute pain in the neck - maybe more special centres. It is so often that 30 suffer for the one or two that are impossible. It should be the other way round.

I think that for security reasons that faces should be seen, I think that head dresses, scarfs etc are ok but as the facial headwear are not actually directly linked to religious reasonings then they are not neccessary in school...I am a white British girl and when I was at school I couldnt wear my hair certain ways, facial piercings, too high heeled shoes etc...we had various rules etc based on safety so I think that by allowing non-religious dress for one and not another is unfair and does not promote equality. Infact it may just cause more stereotyping and more racism between students who feel oppressed and unfairly discriminated. With so much bad stuff happening in schools around the world security and safety shoudl always come first! PS: If a muslim teacher shouldnt wear one, why should a student be allowed?

im not against the muslim head scarf or jewish skull cap but the full veil? theres a woman at my uni doing a nursing course who wears the veil and i just cannt see how she can do her job?ok so its slightly different for school kids but come on. the veil isnt necessarily a religious thing as the crisifix or skull cap is but school is about social inclusion not exclusion isnt it? if the girl wants to wear the veil then she needs to be home schooled or taught in a muslim school. that goes for jews, christians, sikhs, hindus and any other faith too. there must be a clear split between religion and the state or else we will end up like certain areas such as the bible belt of the U.S, or other areas of the world where there isnt such a clear deffinition. you go to school to learn to read and write, you wqant to learn about god and religion then go to the temple, mosque, church etc. if that isnt good enough then theres plenty fee faith based schools out there arent there?

Not that it's any of my business, but who or what is a Vicky Pollard?

That said, I might suggest you stop complaining and run for whatever public office or position is in the habit of making these rules. Make the changes there instead of rabble rousing here.

I think the issue is really one of communication. Covering your face, means that the person you are communicating with cannot see any of your non verbal cues.
You cannot see if they are comprehending what you are saying or completely puzzled.
I agree totally that there are other issues that should be addressed, but I do not think that simply because it is not the biggest issue it should not be addressed if it is easy to do so, and that is what has happened.

I do think that girls who choose to wear the veil should be allowed to do so in their free periods and breaks, but I know that this would not be sufficient for them. Sadly, religion doesn't like to compromise!!

being a man, you've never worn one!
having had long conversations with Muslim women over the veil. & tried it for myself.
it's constrictive, dangerous in windy/rain & murder in the heat.
it's their men folk that insist they wear them, when these women would rather not.
if the Government don't make a stand over such a backward & oppressive garment WHO WILL?
they need to do something, as terrorists have used them to flee this country & escape Justice.

i'm all for BAN THE VEIL.
WELL DONE TO THE GOVERNMENT at last common-sense has arrived.

did we or did we not, invade Afghanistan to save women from wearing those hideous Burkas?
if it's good enough to spur a nation to attack the Taliban,
then we need to ban them here, don't we?

Is it true that the original purpose of the veil was so that Muslim men couldn't see womens faces so that they were not tempted to commit sexual offences against them?

No person should be able to have something others dont have so I say no veils .Muslim people should recognise the fact that their drss etc is offensive to decent American people .~~

Why should you be allowed to wear a veil if I can't carry my Bible or pray? Get over it. It's all religions or none.

no veils, no bibles, just school work. If you want to go to schools that have bibles pay for it there are schools that teach the bible you just have to pay for it. I am sure there are schools that you can have veils you just have to pay for it . don't be cheap
