I am Irish and on the night that my uncle died I could have sworn that I heard one very high pitched singing, my granny said she saw one brushing her hair outside the night my great-grandfather died.
Banshee were woman who in life were paid to cry at funerals (to make the dead person look popular) and they took the money and didn't turn up so in death they became banshee which is the Irish for fairy women.
They are meant to look beautiful with long hair till they begin to sing and then they become hags. Also have heard of the death carriage and in my village loads of people have hear it.It goes through when someone is about to die and rattles the whole house very spooky!
Hope it helps!

The night before my cat died, we were visited by a Cat Banshee. No kidding. (Not in Ireland, though, in the US, but I am half Irish, so maybe the things follow people to other countries or something) The thing was making the most ungodly sounds, screaming right outside the window of the room my poor kitty was laying in, yet if I looked out the window, I could see no sign of an actual cat anywhere. A Banshee visits the household of someone who is about to die. When the person is dying, the Banshee screams. It was rather a surprise when the Cat Banshee showed up. This was a very special, and unusual cat though. She had 6 toes, and was somehow a higher order of life than your usual every day kitty. Her name was Spot, but by the end of her life she had earned the name Xiao Lin Kitty.

I did a search on the web about Banshees, and turned up a cool little animated movie about them. The wailing of the banshee at the end of the film, is *exactly* what I heard the night before my cat died. Kept up the racket for hours. Weird... you can see it at

I had visited the UK and after I returned from the trip it happened.

I was in bed trying to sleep and I heard this very unusual sound. I listened and it went all the way around my house. It was rather freaky.

Within the week a friend of mine in the UK died in an accident.

not me personally but i now live in Ireland and have 101 stories on the banshee. our farm is quite remote and my great grandmother is said to have seen a glimpse of the banshee pass her bedroom window one morning, around the same time her brother was killed in a farming accident twenty miles away. another time our closest neighbour said when he was a child about 60 years ago he woke up in the middle of the night to the sound of a cat screeching and scratching his bedroom door this carried on for a couple of hours, when he arose in the morning his mother was dead in her bed.

My Grandfather worked and live in the Sally Gap in Wicklow, And my mom told me a story about how one night my grandfather was cycling home and he heard her cry and seen her in a field, It took him two day to speak of what he saw and tell them what was wrong with him and then he swore he would never speak about it again and he never did. He face would go pale at the mention of her. No one ever died because of it though,

I could have sworn to God I heard on in our woods. Something out there was making a noise like the gates of hell had been opened.

Turned out to be a Canadian Lynx, which is a very rare animal. Still, it creeped me out.
