well hari i think that either the drivers for the external drive are not correctly installed or the hard disk is corrupt.
Well you should check if the same problem persists when you put the hard disk on someone elses computer because XP has all the drivers for plug and play devices but sometimes there are problems on a particular computer.
Well if it does not work there too please try getting it checked for errors and corruption.

Well also try changing the usb port and connecting it to some other free usb port.

Take Care and happy computing

This could be simple, is your XP patched ?
In order to access drives over 137GB, you will need ServicePack 1 or 2.

Open Control Panel and look under System, it should tell you what level you at, if it says Service Pack 1or 2, then you have a slight problem as to find out why its not working, otherwise down the SP2 file from Microsoft and see if you can fix it.

What error message are you getting.

Usually external drives are connected through USB which is recognizable by Windows XP.

Need more info on this to solve.

external hard drives are plug and play so try plugging and playing it in a different pc. If it works the you know the problem lies in your pc and not with the external hard drive itself. I would try to find that out first of all and then go from there.
