I have to do this Science Fair project for school. I'm doing "Which Paper Towel Is Most Abbsorbent?" . I know this is probably a stupid question, but how exactly should I go about doing this? Do I just pour some water on the floor and mop it up with the towels? Do I use a water dropper and see how many drops they absorb before they break? I've even heard of some people doing it with a cup or something?!? I just wanna know how I should carry out the expeiriment. Please help me! I only have 1 day to do this!

This stupid project was on a list that I HAD to choose from. My teacher made the list so don't blame me. And I've only got one day to do it because the teacher assigned the project the day before most of my class left for our field trip to Washington, D.C. We just got back last night and the project is due tomorrow!!! It's not my fault! Blame the teacher!

Your testing absorbency not durability right? I would find a either a rousting pan or a plastic container that could fit 1 paper towel. something probably 12x12. next i would place a careful measured amount of water within the container..... lets say 1 cup to start. next place the paper towel within the container and let it soak up the water for a designated period of time.... Then take remove the paper towel.... I can see quantifying your results in a few ways.

1. pre-weigh the paper towel and then weigh it after it has had after it has been soaking in water.

or

2. after you remove the soaked towel measure the volume of water remaining in the soaking container.

Things to look for:
-I would press the paper towels under a book or something heavy to make sure that they are flat when they contact the water.
-make sure you dry the soaking container completely between each experiment
-don't be surprised if there is no difference

good luck

Well, as a mom who has gone through something similiar.

First get the towels you are going to use for this experiment.
You shouldn't need more than say 4. Go with a generic, pick another then brawny and scott. Use a large pan like Moms cookie sheets. Something like that. To the side have a large mixing bowl filled with water. Dunk the center of the towel into the bowl. This way the outside of the towel will stay fairly dry to hold on to.

Have your item you will use for weight to place in the middle. You will probably need an assistant for this. Now I know this shows strength of the towel.

For absorbancy- Maybe go with a tablespoon of water in the pan. And document which towel absorbs the quickest by timing it and if it absorbs the whole table spoon of water.

First do this in your own kitchen so you get the demonstration down pat. If the demonstration is part of the grade..;)

Hey this is just off the top of my head...But I have my last one graduating and I have had to help with some crazy projects.

Hope this helps

huh? right ill answer this jus for u and i can go on with my 2 points. firstly buy different paper towel rolls from ur local store, check the brand and the ply, take ones with fragrance and without. pouring water on the table and then letting the paper absorb the water is a neat idea.. but.. why would anyone want to do this for a science project? either way make notes on the absorbtion time and note which ones break when filled with too much water. You could finally end up promoting the good brand. Good luck and next time don take up PROJECTS like these..

What I did in 9th grade was take each brand soak it for, like ten seconds(that is what I did), do about ten of each. Then flatten it out over a bucket. Drop a long cylinder over it(like a non-sharpened pencil, but heaver). Have a yard stick and measure two or three points on the yard stick, and drop it each time from those for each towel, one then the other height; the less breakable the less absorbent. For the towels I used Costo brand and Bounty. Hope this helped. if not I can elaborate in more detail.

Put a piece of a different selection of paper towels over a glass of water and tip them upside down, whichever one drops least water on the floor is the most absorbent.Well you did ask.

You can't operate a paper towel??

You have to control the water dumped so you can measure how much the towels picked up. Other than that, just get it done.
