i bought it in 2004, i know that means it is already 95 years old in computer time but I would like to squeeze a little more out of it before I have to put it down.

Depend on whats on it now, or what model it is, if it has an AGP slot, then you should be able to upgrade it with a better model.
Most newer PC will have PCI-X slots, these are more powerful and there are now more choices to choose from, but a 2 year old PC seem unlikely to have one.

You could start by telling us what kind of computer you have--and by that I mean a model number. At any rate, 2004 wasn't that long ago, so, depending on what kind of expansion slots you have, you should be able to upgrade. But of course, no one can tell you for sure without more information.
