Probably a minor injury but do look carefully for any indication of a fuzzy or cottony appearance. That would indicate a fungus growth and would need to be medicated. Many good fingus medications are available on the market from such companies as Mardel and API. Just medicate per the package instructions.

There are certainly other possibilities, but an injury or a fungus covers the most likely possibilities.

If the white spots look like grains of salt OR have a cotton type look to them, this is disease and should be treated. Otherwise, I have seen red spots occur on my black molly's heads. Like your first answerer said, this could be a slight injury. For injury a small extra dose of your water conditioner, which has "slime" in it to protect the fishes scales and may help soothe any injury that a fish may have.

As I said, if the white spots look suspicious, treat your tank. Good luck..and most of all, have fun with your hobby. Aqauriums provide such great enjoyment.

It could be natural coloring of the scales. Scales can change color over time like human hair. Without seeing the fish its hard to say but it could also be an injury where scales have been rubbed off either by another fish or by something in the tank. I would put some aquarium salt in the water, that way, if it is a wound then this will help heal it. This is good for your fish even if they arent hurt so it wont harm a healthy fish. Good luck!
