Why on earth would you want to learn an obsolete language like Cobol? I mean, it's still used to maintain a few ancient applications, mostly financial stuff of the most boring ilk. But no one purposely starts off to do something in Cobol, and for good reason-- its attempt to be English-like actually just added to the complexity of a project and made extending the language for new protocols and databases a nightmare... Young man, if you want to program I would suggest learning something like PHP to see if you have a taste and aptitude for coding. Then, if you do, you should go on to learn either Java or C. Those two are the really living languages today. And if you want to be a real whiz, after you know your way around Java or C, try your hand at Assembly. Assembly is very close to the machine and good Assembly programmers can easily make 175k/yr. or more. Here are some of the best starting places:
For PHP:

For Java:

For C:

Java is more popular in today's job market because cobol is an old language on the other hand you can prefer cobol too because less people will know cobol, which makes cobol programmers sought after in the case of maintaining old programs written in cobol. However old programs will be converted to new programs written in new languages thus java can be a better option in the long run. Think about pros & cons, and choose the best fit for you

You can always get a book and see if you can download a compiler. Cobol is still used in many legacy systems in corporations, because remaking these systems is just not cost effective. Cobol programmers also experience great job security. There aren't that many of them out there anymore. You might also want to look into C programming. Lots of legacy systems written in C as well.

for some of the other computer languages.
