Katrina was not a "colossal FEMA failure." The federal government is not responsible for and does not provide property insurance for disaster victims. FEMA's role is to try to help in disasters. Local governments, counties, states, charities all try to help when natural disasters occur. If you quit expecting the federal government to solve the world's problems, you won't be disappointed.

In my opinion, it's not the President's job, or shouldn't be, to react to every weather disaster that happens. FEMA exists, and FEMA should react, and the head of FEMA should be blamed if there is a problem. However, it can't be expected that a national bureau can react in hours after a disaster.

The initial reactors should be local --- the city services, such as may have survived the tornado, should do immediate response. If they were destroyed, then neighboring cities should respond with ambulances and medical services. The Kansas State Government, the Governer, etc. are all fully capable of managing disaster response, and are in a better position to do it than someone in Washington who doesn't even know where that town is.

We have to stop letting local authorities off the hook on these things. They get paid for this. All the federal government is good for ini these cases is writing checks to people and calling in the military to help. What else are they supposed to do? They don't have ambulances and construction workers on staff.

Plus, repairs to houses need to be made by the people who own the property. You can't have the government forcing people to rebuild - they can't make anybody do anything. So insurance claims have to be filed and then work needs to be done. But it would be a sad state of affairs if we got to the point where we sat around wating for FEMA to tell us what to do.

I have never been in a tornado, but have been near enough to know that no matter how fast the government (any level) acts, there will be some people who complain that they were not assisted fast enough. The weather has been awful in tornado alley this week and I'm sure that has hampered efforts to assist people affected by the storms. These are PEOPLE helping PEOPLE. President Bush cannot just snap his fingers and make everything okay any more than you or I can. Sorry for the rant............

Geez, here we go again. I can only imagine what the people affected by the tornado are going through. That has got to be horrible. But, good grief! WE cannot expect the government to take care of us! There are resorces out there to help, ie. the Red Cross, FEMA, but we have to be responsible for ourselves FIRST. So sick of this issue.

no he did not, have any one of you been in a tornado? i didn't either, but i was an emt i have seen what happens after a tornado, no the government doesn't owe you a living but i bet one of you has had a bad, experience with the gov. just a few mins ago i read that kansas and other states were hit again by tornado's, there were other states too. have you read about all the tornado's that have hit in the last 2 wks? count them and tell me you don't think the people need help. we give the gov a lot of money, what happens to it? look at all the agencies they have, okay now how much money is that, and where did it go? what if some of those people don't have insurance, because they couldn't afford it. i will stop now but please don't turn your back on these people, check in about the rich got help before the poor in new orleans, yes some of them lied, stole money from the gov. but the gov has too.

Ronald M, grow up, its not Bush's job to micro manage every damn thing that happens, the state and fema have enough people in charge to be able to act without having to run like little children to the president everytime something happens. Suggest you try and grow up and stop coming with stupid posts.

The tornado was part of a vast right wing conspiracy, too, I bet. I bet that whole town even voted for libs and we had to get rid of them quietly. Better launch the congressional hearings on who knew what and when.

Stop expecting the government to help; if there's one thing the government cannot do, it's effectively help people. Those elected are there for their ego and those hired are there for the entitlements. Anyone interested in really making a difference is in private sector.

Had congress sent a clean anti-tornado bill to the President's desk to sign, that tornado would never have happened to begin with.

Perhaps Al Gore should have been there in advance to send that funnel back into the clouds before it touched down.

I think we need to get off Bush's *** about everything. yes he acted quick enough - do you think you could have done better? People need to quit whining all the damn time and get off their asses and help themselves for once!

***If those people could not afford insurance, maybe they should have quit smoking, or cut back on the amount of beer they bought, or cut back on something so they could have spent the money on insurance!! It is not like insurance is a big secret...I mean you know you need it, so you do what you have to do to have it! Why is everything always someone else's fault?? I dont get it....people need to be held accountable for their own actions - quit pointing fingers!
