I absolutly LOVE that name, but really want to know why it's her nickname. Like, my mum wouldn't just randomly start calling me another name, so why does everyone call her Lolita (except for her school friends who call her Dolly) when her real name is Dolores. Thanks a bunch !!

I think her mom called her "Lo"--cut the "Do" off the beginning and the "res" off the end. I think Humbert Humbert came up with "Lolita" himself, I don't think anyone else called her that, but as someone said, it makes sense in Spanish and he likes to show off how European he is.

Someone named Victoria may be called "Tori" by her friends and "Vicky" by her parents, or Elizabeth may be "Liz" or "Beth" so I don't think that part's too surprising.

I think it is a play on the "Lo" part of Dolores.

In Spanish, "ita" means "little". So a girl named Rosa for example would be "Rosita" as a diminutive name, or a nickname for a little girl meaning "Little Rose".

So...seeing that there is "Lo" in the name, add the "ita" and add an "L" in the middle=="Lolita"

It's a Spanish nickname for small, young, tiny, but the west have turned it into a name for a promiscuous young girl. Have a good day.
