When I was in this program at the end of high school we could work and go to college for free but they told us we couldn't choose a career in hospitality because it was a dead end.

Certainly worldwide this is a widespread field. However, know that most of the jobs in hospitality are very low-paid. I got my original degree in hotel and restaurant management, and if I were to look at my classmates today, very few of them remained in the field after a few years (myself included).
