Machine knit for every day, and hand knit for special occasions. Yes they do last as long as machine knit, especially if you use sock yarn. They can be warmer than machine knit, as you control the type of yarn you use. And best of all, they serve as "hugs" for the feet. Anyone who is wearing a pair of handknit socks knows that those socks were made for those feet! like a prayer shawl for feet! only if you are a new knitter, and swear alot at your project, best not give it to someone special!

I would guess machine knitted, just to make sure that the socks are able to withstand a lot of wear. I would think with hand knitted, the quality wouldn't be AS reliable.

I think it is a thing of personal preference.

Machine knitted, store-bought, are cheaper.
Many different designs available.

Hand knitted can be made to fit perfectly, specially if you have out-model feet or lower legs.

If you decide to try hand-knit, make sure you buy special sock yarn. If you have that yarn they stay as long as store-bought, or even longer, and when they do wear thin, you only have to knit the foot, not the leg.

Seaman's Church Institute asks for hand-knitted socks for their sailors. I don't know why but they prefer the hand knitted kind. I also think they are easier to knit by hand than on a machine and they have more give (in my experience). That's really all I can add...

hand knit, no question. Use sock yarn, most of which is 80% wool, 20% nylon. My hand knit socks last longer than most of the ones I buy at the store and they make my feet feel great.

Wow, you ask a lot of questions about socks. Hand knitted are prettier, but they are too thick inside shoes, and I find they are only good for a few wearings, even in sandals or clogs.

Anything made by your own two hands, even with the help of needles or a loom (the Knifty Knitter) is well worth having! And it's friendly to the environment - go green and knit your own ;)
