Other than cutting it down, there is no quick way. The sure way to kill a tree is to girdle it. To do this you need to cut a strip of bark about 4" wide and all the way around. It takes a year for the tree to die as the sap cannot get to the top because when it gets to the strip you cut out, it overflows and goes to the ground.

RE:
What's the best way to kill a tree?
Does any body know what are the best and quickest chemicals I need to kill a tree ?I would prefer to use chemicals as I do not want to chop or saw it down. The tree is about 4 inches in diameter at it's base .If you've used some other means(e.g. copper nails)please explain--thanks.

To Jeanne: You think it is OK to use weed killer but not kerosene because it isn't good for the environment. Most weed killers that I have seen have kerosene in them. If it doesn't then I mix it in.
Sorry but as for your question just hook a truck to it & pull it out. Make sure you hook at the top of the tree. This will give you leverage & keep you from pulling it down on top of you.

Cut a belt in the bark all the way around. This is called girding. The live part of the tree is just under the bark. Girding the tree will kill it faster than any chemical. You will still have to remove the dead tree, eventually.

Roundup would be your best bet. It's Glyphosate based, not petroleum based as somebody suggested, so it's not bad for the environment.
If that doesn't work, another brand you could use would be Killex, but that actually is somewhat bad for the environment (and for your health) and should be used with discretion.

The MORON who suggested kerosene should be banned from Yahoo and contact with the general public.
Bottom line if you must kill the tree.... which you shouldn't. You must kill the roots.
It will require sweating.

Ringbark it ! but when it dies how are you going to remove it? It's always easier to remove a tree whilst it's still living.

If you want to use a chemical, then Round Up is what you want. Remove a small area of bark, then spray it thoroughly. It takes time for it to die, but it will.
DO NOT use kerosene ! It is an environmental hazard, and illegal to use kerosene that way in most states.
