Hai,
Obviously you're what I might describe as; Damsel-not-really-in-distress yet. If only you know what to do. I've read all the replies up there (or is it down there?), they're all seems helpful, if only they are little bit detail about it. Using Hair Dryer or even a Vacuum Cleaner is not really recommended if you're planning to remove the casings and blow up some heat in there or remove some dust in there. These electrical appliances may generate enough 'static current' that could short circuit your mother board if you're unlucky.

Furthermore, how much heat you're planning to apply onto the laptop to allow the entrapped water to evaporate (without damaging the motherboard)? Certainly not many laptop owners knows how to remove the laptop's casings, you'll end up doing unnecessary damage to your laptop (such as; how to assemble back the motherboard?). If you're not certain what need to be done, I recommend you to send the laptop to the Service Center. You'll have to shove a little bit cash to fix it up unless, you know somebody that would love to do it for free.

Moreover, you didn't mention what really happened in detail. Did you spill the water when the computer is ON? Assuming you did spill it when the computer is ON, did you directly pushed the Power Button to Shut Down? Does the screen when blank (or fuzzy) as the water sips thru the keyboard and it Shut Down by itself? If you manage to Shut Down and remove the Laptop's Battery immediately; then your laptop is 90% safe. Other than that, I can't guarantee, even with the Divine-Hair-Dryer Intervention. Most likely your motherboard is fried if that’s the case. If you're planning to remove the casings, make sure to remove the ‘Upper Casing’ first, which is the Keyboard. Most Laptops' casings are designed to allow it be opened from top (to remove the Keyboard, Touch Pad and Buttons/Speakers dash board) as well as the bottom side (Motherboard screws).

To remove the Keyboard, firstly, locate the screws at the back of the laptop (situated at the back-side below the LCD screen and NOT the screws beneath the Laptop) and start removing the screws (label it if you’re removing a lot of screws). Next, tilt the screen to almost 180 degree (opposite to closing it), pry open the ‘speakers dash board’ (some laptops’ designs requires you to move the ‘speakers dash board’ first). Then, when you’re about to remove the keyboard; make sure you remove it SLOWLY (and HORIZONTALLY) to prevent any water accumulating inside it to pour out and onto the motherboard! You may use the hair dryer on the keyboard but, if you insist to use the hair-dryer on the motherboard; please do it at a very safe and far distance. You don’t want to do any unnecessary damage to the motherboard due to the intense heat generated by the hair dryer.

Perhaps, once you opened up the casings you are tempted to use the Vacuum Cleaner because it is dusty. DO NOT ever vacuum your motherboard; ‘minute static charge’ generated by the tip of the vacuum nozzle will damage your motherboard! Please use non-static spray can or simply uses a soft non-static brush to cleanse the motherboard. Leave it to dry, please minimize touching the motherboard and place back the casings as soon as possible when you’re done. Leave it at least 48 hours (or longer) before attempting to switch it ON again. If problem still persists, send in another question and we’ll laugh about it together (just kidding)  Good luck!

Turn it off and let it evaporate. If you dropped a lot of water in and the laptop was on then it might be dead. If you just spilt a few drops it may have been trapped in the keyboard. Do NOT turn it on if you suspect there is still water inside.

You could possibly use a hair dryer on a low setting, not too hot or you will damage components. I wouldn't recommend this, however.

Finally, take it to a repair shop and let them give it the once over.

If you are comfortable giving it a try, power on and see what happens. Either way, it'll either work or not, cost you money or not, depends how much of a risk taker you are.

Take out the mains lead, and the battery if you can. Have the laptop open and turn it so the keyboard is upside-down and leave it in a warm (not hot) place for 24-48 hours, like the airing cupboard. There should be space under the keyboard for air to circulate. Put the battery back without the mains lead and try to switch it on. If it does not work then it's a trip to the repair shop, but it will probably be OK. If all seems OK put the mains lead back in. Similar advice for desktop keyboards, blackberries, mobile phones etc.

Right, you might have to say good-bye (I'm just been realistic here - sorry). But you won't have to say good-bye to all of it.

Firstly take out the battery, open the case and leave it in a warm place (about 35 degrees C - no more). Then try and see if it works again. If it does not, you'll have to buy a new laptop - but wait - you won't have to lose all of your data. Make sure your new laptop has the same type of hard disk as your old laptop, take out the hard disk from your old laptop and put it in your new one.

If you want a step-by-step guide through doing this, email me: matt@mattireland.co.uk Alternatively, if you think you can do it on your own: go for it mate.

Good luck!

Make sure you TURN YOUR LAPTOP OFF. You don't want the circuit boards running electricity while there is water in it. You could fry the laptop or even injure yourself. So, I recommend you turn it off, and let it dry.

turn it off now!!!! the worst thing for electronics is water and electricity, then use a hair dryer.... lightly with the least amount of heat possible to dry it out and make sure it's all dry before you turn it back on!!!!!
