There seems to be some ambiguity here. I always thought a unit fraction is a fraction which equals 1.
2/2, 3/3, 4/4, etc. They are very useful when doing dimension conversions. For instance
1 miles = 1.609344 kilometers. This can be expressed as
1 = 1 mi/1.609344 km or
1 = 1.609344 km/1 mi.
Dimensional unit fractions can be "chained" together to get almost any conversion you need, since you are always multiplying by 1. The dimensions can be treated as algebraic variables and canceled or raised to powers:
1 mi^3(1.609344 km/1 mi)^3 = (1.609344)^3 km^3.
