I have tested by broadband speed on 4 different sites and the download speed ranges from 670K to 3.4Mb. All were run within seconds of each other. Whats the difference

Its up to test server , if speed test webpage close to you it will give high result. If not will give low result.

To test your speed, testing sites send and receive packets of data to and from your computer. Based on the time it took for the data to go back and forth, they make calculations oh what your supposed speed is.

However, during the process, the data sent may go through congested network traffic thus the time it took for the data to travel may vary. Thus different sites give different results.

their right your up speed and down speed vary all the time, its never the same. do a speed test again at the same site and youll always get a different result

The web is constantly inundated with traffic that fluctuates second by second. You will virtually never get two readings exactly the same.

Average your readings and just be happy.

above is correct..

Plus speed can be limited by:
number of people checking their speed at that site
number of people dl'ing at your ISP
max bandwith of your ISP
max bandwith of the place you are testing too
any number of bottlenecks between you and the test site
number of people connected to your nearest router
(ie if it's cable.. and 50 of your neighbors are downloading
torrents/checking their speed... getting fresh videos :) )

It depends on how far away you are from the test server computer and how bogged down that server is.
