Got xp on my pc, it went currupt and would not boot. So i was going through the process of re-installng it with the xp disc when half way through my son pulled the plug out! GRR! Now when I try to boot the machine it asks me which copy of xp I'd like to boot from, of corse neither will run. So I try to use the xp disc to start over but it gets to the blue window with terms and cond. and no further! I've been told I need to format the hard drive and re-install windows and without puting the hard drive in my other machine, is there a way please?

Hmmm a tricky 1. You may be able to format from DOS you need a geek to tell you how to do that. Or you could get the boot code from the place you bought the pc from. Have a good old read of that bluse screen you should be able to re install it. Also worth trying to boot from a version of xp like you said then it may ask you to put the disks in. There whould be a way of doing it if it as genuine software. Good luck if you have no luck today email me and I will se if I can rack my brains further. I cannot read emails at work so home after 3 pm.

After reading otheranswers it seems I over looked a simple thing indeed go into BOIS and slelect boot from CD drive and retry. Good luck.

It seems it is asking you the boot options from the hard disk, and is not booting from cd. You need to press any key when it displays the message on the screen for a short period during the boot process. Otherwise enter the BIOS settings and see if the cd drive is set to boot first in the boot sequence

Download the Ultimate Boot CD
http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/
Burn it to a CD
Boot to it
Use the partition tools included in it
Delete all partitions
Then your good to go with the XP disc

If all that fails, erase the entire disc completely using Boot and Nuke (also included in the Ultimate Boot CD)

And then you are definitely good to go with the XP disc

You need to BOOT to the XP cd, then follow the onscreen prompts. Use the guide the first poster linked to.

You'll need to go into your systems BIOS and select the CD-ROM drive as the first boot device in order to boot from the cd.

Your computer has to be started in DOS to do it. Using a different computer, you can download XP bootdisks from microsoft to get there. You'll need 6 blank floppys. Once you get them, you start the computer with number 1 in it and it will ask for the rest. Once all six have ran, it will go to DOS mode where you can type in Format C and clear the thing out. You can also start up XP from the floppys as well.
