Honestly, I love the Leafs they are my team but come on now they suck, I am ashamed to even say that I like them let me tell you and how long has it been since they took the cup? been in the playoffs? Sundin I solute you but other than that I don't even give a flying **** no more and another thing is the Leafs need to just give it up because they really, suck.

Like I said I love the Leafs but what the hell, I have everything in my place that has to do with them but they are very embarrassing point blank.

Cheers.

1 Realize that there are 29 other teams that someone can love. And those people may trash, or hate any other team they want.

But I would say more Canadians hate the Leafs, just as many Canadians love them.

2) They are an old school fad. I'm far from young. And seriously, the generation before me are all Leafs fans. They remember back to an era when the Leafs were Canada's team. Well that ended in 1970. So unless you are over 50, you cheer for a team closer to home. And, although there are some mama's boys cheering for for their parents team, MOST go through a rebellion stage and don't cheer for a team they see as the team of ancient history. I don't listen to my parents and grandparents music, why would I watch their hockey team?

3) Toronto is a losing team. Again, I am not young, yet I do not ever remember a TML team that was a winner. They last won over 40 years ago, so if you are over 5o you may recall a winning TML team. I live on the west coast and a Vancouver fan. But even before Vancouver, kids were mostly Boston Fans or Montreal Fans. Why? Because these teams were winners. Since then, you get kids that grew up with winners that were Oilers, Penguins, Islanders, Flames, Red Wings, etc. etc. No one sees TML as winners, other than the old school.

4) It is forced down our throat. CBC and Canadian TV, don't try very hard. They spend a lot of time catering to the Toronto viewer and don't care about the rest of us. So, they broadcast all kinds of TML games, and broadcast them nation wide, not caring what we want to watch. Sure, then some 60 year olds like to watch it too. But, in the west if we wanna see some Montreal games or Ottawa games, we have to either suffer or pay a lot. It even interferes with western games, as they only have 2 or 3 film crews, ONE of witch is permanent to TML. So the other teams have to share, and oh - your home team game isn't available because the crew is in Calgary or Edmonton or Vancouver - not in all three.

5) They are horrible - they don't try to be good - which makes above points even worse. But TML has a captive market, and large fan base that is going to sell out all games and televise all games. No extra revenues to be earned, so why spend money on being good? So, you have 40 years of putting a horrible team on the ice.

6) They are over hyped. Face it, TML are horrible, yet fans insist they are good. Worse, all those CBC and TSN broadcasters are from Toronto too, and raving about them. Or maybe just selling the hype because that is their biggest market. The rest of us get tired of it.

Do you want the other half of my list, or is this good enough for now?

I have been a hockey fan for 15 years (red wings fan) and I have never heard of people hating the leafs. Some people thought Tie Domi was a psycho but I don't know anyone who hates the team. Heck, I only hear about the anti-red wings hatred on this website. Plus, any wings fan with half a brain should be able to tell you that although they are one of the best if not the best this year they are not showing the complete dominance of all other teams that they did in the late 90's.

I know that people hated the canadiens as an evil empire in the past but they haven't really been a dominant force.

I also knew alot of people who thought carolina was a complete fluke last year but I always thought that teams get lucky breaks once in a while.

If you live close enough that Leaf fans can caravan to your arena, that might be it. It's not that they root for their team, it's that they get hammered and obnoxious. Fights, beer and food flying through the air can turn your stomach.

Another reason could be the cash that they had available, pre-salary cap. Toronto, NYR and Detroit would spend and spend to stack their team. Can't blame them for trying and it wasn't illegal. However any fan in a smaller market would root against these evil empires, just like the hordes of people who hate the Yankees for the same reason.

Another reason is that the Leafs were moved from the Western Conference to the Eastern Conference. They developed rivalries in both conferences.

Last one that I'll give is history. The longer that your favorite team has been in the league, the more likely that they have been rivals of TO at one point or played against them in the playoffs. Hate can last a long time.

What Scotty F said, plus I would add that there is something that is always going to rub people raw about the Leafs. It's not just a longevity, winning thing, or the Habs would be the most hated Canadian team. When people think of the recent teams from Toronto, they remember Domi, they remember Tucker, etc. When it comes to Montreal, they think of Koivu. There is a certain perception of lack of class for Toronto teams.

Actually people don't hate the leafs as much as they hate the leaf fans, who argue the most inane situations in hockey and then tell you how the leafs got screwed by the officials.
Leaf fans don't argue true facts and don't admit that their team has a weakness, d, forwards, goalie?

I don't hate the leafs. I hate the cult like following the media in Canada provides them. There is a certain, train wreck like, fascination though to see how they will screw up each year.

I don't really know that many people who hate the Maple leafs , but the reason why I don't like them is that the team , which got to be the most Canadian has too many European players and captain , this way they will wait for Stanley cup for another 40 years .
