The traditional American Dream is a house in the suburbs, a good job, two kids, a dog and a white picket fence.
Of course, the "Dream" isn't the same for everyone -- not everyone wants a dog or kids -- but this is the...I guess you'd call it the stereotypical American Dream.
The Dream symbolizes 'the good life.' The Dream means that by working hard at an honest job, you can have all the good things in life.
I'm sure there are more, deeper meanings, but I hope I've answered your question.

Basically the American Dream, is the idea that anyone can come from anywhere, and overcome bad circumstances, poverty, lack of education, etc. to make something of themselves, and have a good life in America. In some countries, who your parents were, or what town you were born in, or if you are poor, has alot to do with how society treats you, and some people are held back from having a chance to make something of themselves, and society won't allow them to progress any further. Here in America, it is the American ideal that all are created equal, and should be treated equally, in the eyes of society, and under the law. In reality, it doesn't work out that way all the time, but it is a principle of American thought that it's the way it should be, and what we strive for. Even though it doesn't work that way 100% of the time, it is part of the American consciousness that we as a people encourage and applaud those who apply themselves to bettering themselves and overcoming thier circumstances, and hold up those who show qualities like initiative, inventiveness, and entrpreneurial skill as examples to strive for. We love the "self made man". (or woman)

I think most of the people in the world know this EXCEPT for Americans.
Americans think:
1) It's a thing of the past OR
2) A home in the suburbs with a white picket fence.
However, it is going from having NOTHING. No money, no time, no education, and perhaps not speaking English to eventually become fabulously wealthy and have everything that you want that money can buy.
Oprah is probably the brightest example of this fulfillment, however you could add Sam Walton, Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Michael Jordan, etc.

In the 70s, it was peanuts, hotdogs, apple pie, and Chevrolet.
Today, it is to own one's own home, and own a business....
