The aim in politics is to gain power and to hang on to it. Much in the same way that the sole purpose of a business or enterprise is to make profits.

In a democracy, it is the duty of the opposition to plot by democratic means, the downfall of the government.

It is in effect, a form of bloodless and perpetual revolution. This system of government, "The worst save all those tried before", according to Winston Churchill, holds out 'hope' for the people in that the people know that one day their argument and support of same will win the day.

Well, that's the basic plan anyway.

In the meantime, we can all just go on plotting in the hope that one day we may arrive at the top of the heap.

Always bear in mind that what goes up, must one day come down. Tony Blair will shortly be leaving 10 Downing Street. In his place will come another person, Gordon Brown.

One day, even the mighty shall fall and die.

It happens ever thus.

The future belongs to the young.

I don't think that 'Political Power' is the ultimate achievement in life for every body. In deed there are/were people who devoted their entire life mongering for power. In the so cold developing countries and Africa you can encounter many people with such tribal ideas.

However the modern world is accepting and handing over power in a peaceful and responsible manner. They get elected and then when their term of office finishes they give their power to the elected person.

Depends on how you use that power. Take Bush..... the most powerful man on the planet, but also the most hated, followed closely by Blair.

With power, I feel must come resepect. But respect cannot be demanded with power.... that's the great thing about respect, no matter where you apply it, it always has to be earned.

I don't believe so. I believe the ultimate achievement in life is salvation through Jesus Christ, the Lord. I offer this as my humble belief.
