The relation between Celsius & Fahrenhite scale is
C/5=(F-32)/9
the lower fixed point of Celsius is 0 degree & upper fixed point is 100 degree. For Fahrenhite they are 32 degree & 212 degree. So Fundamental interval of Celcius =100 & Fahrenhite =180.
so in Celsius 100 division=Fahrenhite 180 division
in Celsius 1 division= Fahrenhite 180/100 division
= 9/5 division
so 1degree Celsius=9/5 degree Fahrenhite
Now let at any unknown temp. the murcury reading in Celsius is C & that of Fahrenhite is F. In Fahrenhite the murcury crosses (F-32) readings from Lower fixed point & in case of Celsius murcury crosses C readings.

so in Celsius C readings = In Fahrenhite (F-32) readings
but 1degree Celsius=9/5 degree Fahrenhite
so C degree Celsius= 9/5*C ''
so (F-32)=9/5*C
or C/5=(F-32)/9

Centigrade scale is 0 to 100
Fahrenheit scale is 32 to 212

100° C <------>212° F
1° C <------> 180 / 100 = 9 / 5 ° F
0° C = 32 ° F

Example
Change 15°C to °F
15° C is 15° above freezing in C scale
= 15 x 9 / 5 ° above freezing in F scale
= 27 ° above 32°
= 59° F

A rough check to change ° C to °F is to X by 2 and add 30.

F = C * 9/5 + 32
and
C = (F - 32) * 5/9

Here is a link to the explanation:

I would have summarized it, but I would'nt be able to do it as well with less words.
