a] wash it... funny... washing a sponge...
b] microwave it for 2 minutes... why don't you put a worm in too, see what happens???
c] put salts (bath salts) on it, topped with soap, then water on both sides... once again, cleaning a sponge... but FANCIER!

of course, buying a new sponge would have been an obvious answer if you want an entirely new one. but we've got several ways on how to get rid of the foul smell on a sponge (supposing that this sponge is for dish washing). you can have it soaked on a bowl-full of vinegar. leave for a few minutes and rinse it to remove the vinegar smell. vinegars have properties that remove foul smell. another good option is to have it disinfected through boiling it with water. leaving it on boiling water will for sure remove unwanted odor and bacteria. if you're in a hurry and does not want any other hassle, soaking it on water mixed with bleach will do just fine. make sure to leave it soaked for around 5 minutes.

If you are not too attached to it, I would suggest throwing it out and getting a new one.
A smelly sponge means that there is bacteria or fungus growing in it.
If you just can't live without it, you're best bet is just to soak it in a water/bleach solution, but then you'll never get the bleach smell out.
Just get a new one.

soak the sponge in water with baking soda - let it sit for 30 minutes, put the sponge in the microwave for 60 seconds, remove and rinse with tap water, let dry in the sun for 30 minutes.

If you have an automatic dishwasher, you should run it thru on the top shelf to sanitize it, it smells because of the germs. It will come out clean and smelling good.
