I have a '99.. Sometimes when i try to start it, it won't start. it maks a loud annoying noise! Some times it'll do it once, but other times it takes forever to start! I've been told to get a new starter, but I'm afraid it would still do it.. and that's a lot of money. Does this happen to anyone else, or do you have any tips? Thanks.

yeah... I guess you could say it's a grinding noise.

The starter may have been bad, but by letting it go, you may be doing damage to an internal part of your engine. If you think a starter is expensive to replace, wait until they tell you you need a new ring gear. The starter is an electric motor that when engaged (turned on) pushes a small gear out and makes it spin.
That gear meshes (hooks up to) a bigger gear that is attached to the crankshaft (the part that turns the whole engine) I think what you are hearing, is those gears clanging together, and they are not engaging because the teeth on the gears are broken off. Have the car looked at. Tell the mechanic this......
If you have an automatic transmission. tell him to check the starter Bendix Gear and the flexplate.
If you have a manual transmission, check the starter gear, and the the flywheel ring gear. If those gears are broken, you will wish you had replaced the starter when the noise first started.

If the solenoid is failing on the starter it can cause the starter to either engage late, not at all or release before the engine completely starts. That sounds like the noise you are hearing. Replacing the starter should fix the noise problem.

If the screeching happens once you initiate the motor vehicle, yet does not keep the motor vehicle from commencing, it relatively is a belt. If the motor vehicle merely starts whilst it relatively is not screeching, then it relatively is the starter. In my adventure a starter makes extra of a grinding noise, whether it relatively is particularly severe pitched. a bad belt could make a screeching sound that gradually gets quieter by fact the motor vehicle warms up, like in a pair seconds, or in step with probability longer if it relatively is relatively undesirable. by skill of how, the starter isn't linked to the transmission and as long as you're no longer in kit once you initiate the motor vehicle there is not any way it ought to harm the transmission, AFAIK.

Take the car to your mechanic,it's either the starter or you have problems with your fuel injectors and a cougar has 4 fuel injectors and they will mess up your car to the point that you will need a new engine.

have it checked dude. you might be spending more if you let it go on. happened to me before. but if it is during start ups, there are a few possibilities:
1. Starter might be already busted or worn out
2. Alternator malfunction
3. Battery is grounded

And the noise is what?
Grinding gear noise? If so, your starter is shot, or at the least, the starter solenoid is.
