Technically once you compose the work -even if you don't write it down- it is yours and under copyright law. There are several ways to prove that the music is yours. Record it in a way you can prove the date of the recording. A studio recording is an excellent way to do this because there will be wittnesses.
To make it official you should contact the United States Copyright Office (assuming you live in the United States). There is a form to fill out to legally record the existance of your work. Another organization to be in touch with is American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP)
The purpose of this organization is to help you get paid for the use of your music, whether it is and audio recording or written on paper.

copyright is automatic once in fixed form. writing it on the staff paper puts it in fixed form. a signature and date would be desirable also. a recording is NOT legal evidence of fixed form in the USA, by retroactive congressional action, a recording cannot be used as evidence of publication for any purpose.

if you are concerned about theft, then submit to the copyright office for official registration, costs about $45 in the USA.
