think of it this way:
single core- a side street. only 1 lane and if some1 in front of you is going slow your stuck going slow. for a processor it can only do 1 thing at a time.
ht(hyperthread)- a 2 lane road. 1 lane but if its clear you can pass and get where your going faster. ht can do 1 main thing and squeezes something else in at the same time.
dual core- 4 lane road. 2 lanes mean a lot more people can get where their going without backups. dc can do 2 things at once without a big backup, like running virus scan and burn a cd.
quad core- the freeway. 4 lanes means your getting where your going fast. qc is the best you can do right now, you can run a virus scan, burn a cd, download music, and be playing a game without problems

HT is hyper threading, which allows programs to do 2 more software threads at a time. AMD has its own version.

Dual core is 2 processors, and Intel already has the Quad processors out.

Dual Cores, either AMD or Intel, are affordable and more efficient than older, single cores.

Forget HT processors. They waste (leak) a lot of electricity that is why Intel moved away from that technology and developed the efficient and hi-performance Core2 Duo. If you are not a power user, consider the cheap C2D Allendales, E4300 and 4400. Or if you are on a tight budget, AMD,s X2 3600+ and 3800+. With a good graphics card like a 7900GS or a X1950 Pro, you could expand usage to gaming.

Dual core is better obviously. AMD has the X2 series dual cores which are inexpensive and powerful, plus they don't generate much heat.
Get a socket AM2 system, since that will give you future compatibility with the upcoming 4-core AMD processors soon to hit the streets in a few months.

They will both work, HT is a single processor split its workloads into 2 virtual processors, Dual core has 2 physical processors, so if the software can make use of it correctly, they provide much better performance
