I was thinking of buying a class 8 Semi truck to tow a 53' box trailer converted into an RV. I got the idea from seeing the NASCAR team's rigs, which are very nicely equipped. I think a big rig would make a radical RV, but what kind of hassles will I be faced with? I'll need a commercial license obviously, but what about tax and licensing? When I travel do I have to stop at truck weigh stations? I currently own a 30ft standard RV, and I travel all around the country. I live in AZ. Will a Semi be a good choice for stepping up the size of my rig, or will I be biting off more than is worth chewing? How much does it cost to get a commercial license anyway? I can afford the truck, but how bad will my operating costs be? I hear stuff about semis paying huge taxes. That's only for commercial use though right? The NASCAR guys don't pay commercial rates cause its a privatley used rig, right?

your partially right on this one if its for private use,you usually don't have to pay as high of a tax on it,but there is still a fee involved with it,I'm not really sure of the amount, but even with a over sized motor home they pay a certain fee for using the public highways, its considered a tax more or less, but you still have to pay it,its a lot to take on ,i think if it was me id be happy with the one you have now,you may be biting off more than you can chew on this one, good luck hope this helps.

I've seen this done before, but you MAY be better off just buy an entertainer coach, basically a 45-ft bus with interior of an RV. If you are into American football... It's like the Madden Outback Steakhouse Cruiser. :)

If you go for a truck or semi, you have to put "private vehicle, not for hire" on both side doors so people (including cops) don't mistake you for commercial truck. I've seen bands do this before, as it's cheaper than motel rooms and a large van towing a trailer. However, the driving is a bit of a problem. I suggest a longbed truck instead of a semi / trailer as it's just much simpler.

I just wanted to make sure you know you are not aloud to have any people in trailer when driving on the road. You would be better off with a normal RV if you are taking your family.
