Everyone has a favorite chrome polish that they prefer for one reason or another.
If the chrome is pitted (like an older front bumper), nothing except for re-chroming will make it look new again. You can improve it's appearance, but the mirror-like finish will not come back with simple polish.
When dealing with chrome, the most important thing is to avoid anything that will scratch. This includes steel wool, polishes with talc or other abrasives. You also want to avoid anything with strong acids, like some wheel cleaners, Naval jelly or even soda.
I've worked with custom metal parts for years and a truck driver turned me onto this non-abrasive polish called Wenol. There are two grades - Red for removing heavy oxidation and Blue for fine polishing. A lot of tanker drivers use the stuff to produce the mirror finishes you see on gasoline and milk trucks.
It's not available at regular auto parts stores, but is available at some speed shops and on-line. It works on most metals, including chrome and will not ever scratch.
I'm not a dealer, distributor or spammer - just a happy customer and biker who has been using the stuff since 1989.

I worked for a company that manufactured fire trucks and to shine all the chrome, especially for customer inspections we used a product called 5star. You apply it with one cloth, and polish/buff with another. You can find it at an automotive shop, it's manufactured by ZEP. I love it! They came out with it in a tube and I use it on my wedding and engagement rings and they really sparkle. It's safe for all metals. They may have a web site where you can purchase it direct.

I use Chrome-Tech by American Racing on my trim and wheels, never found anything better even at twice the price (You can usually find it at places that sell American Racing rims for about $12-$15). I buy mine online for $10 a bottle from BWT, I'll put a link below...
Good luck!
