I have a lot of respect for many voices of rock.

Best classic rock singer: Robert Plant, Led Zeppelin.

Best control over voice: Steven Tyler, Aerosmith. Still Dream On ready after all these years.

For the asker: The black lady singer who does that unbelievable vocal on The Great Gig In The Sky is Clare Torrey. I got hooked on Pink Floyd by her simulated sex singing. She's more convincing than Donna Summer, for sure.

As far as control over their voice, Freddy Mercury was good at that, so is Steven Tyler. As far as personal preferences, I like ZZ Top, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Santana, Van Halen, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Pink Floyd.

Hasn't anyone heard Ian Gillan of Deep Purple sing "Child in Time"? He still rocks at 62. Also, Steve Perry of Journey.

I think Ann Wilson is, but since many women try to sound like her and can, I think Janis Joplin might take her place. I have yet to hear anyone able to sound like Janis Joplin. When you hear a song by Janis, you know it's her.
