Tornados can form any time day or night. The key ingredient is a powerful storm with strong updraft winds -- not just a powerful thunderstorm! In Kansas, there has been a report of a tornado on the ground in every month of the year except for January --- even the cold weather months. For obvious reasons, cold weather tornados are not usually as powerful or a destructive as warm weather tornados. The reason tornados are most deadly at night are because you can't see them coming except on radar and most people are in bed sleeping instead of watching weather reports on the tv. Welcome to "Tornado Alley". :)

I have lived in "tornado alley" all my life. Most tornadoes form in the late afternoon around dusk, but can form any time. They do this more during this time because of the temperature changes from the hottest part of the day to the cooler evening.

We saw two tornadoes yesterday evening west of us, and then between 5 and 6 pm we had one heading right towards us (didn't hit) and had one just east of us (didn't hit us but did our neighbors and others north of us. We didn't see more but were under a tornado watch until 2 am.

Ah, yeah. They can. Usually the heat of the day helps to fuel them. Though, the nigt time tornados are normally the more deadliest of all since people are not out watching for them; and even if there is a siren, people sleeping don't hear them.
Never even see it comming! No time to take shelter.

Yes they most certainly can!

They certainly do, I grew up in OKlahoma and remember getting up and sitting in the hallway with my family several times. I remember one that happened just about 1999, and did some pretty bad damage to the outskirts of the Tulsa area.

Really, it's any time of the day. Unfortunately, where I live, it seems like major storms always hit at night. We had one last night, and we're supposed to have some tonight. It's just weird.
