I think it's a great question. Sorry I missed it the first time around. I have two thoughts on this:

First, I think it's strangely ironic that Christians in America feel they are fighting a battle to preserve marriage. That battle was lost generations ago when easy divorce became the norm.

Second, I feel that "marriage" is the wrong place to make an exemption to separation of church and state. We ought to simply have civil unions for all who want them, with all the legal, medical, tax, etc. liabilities and priveleges that go along with them. And if you want to have a religious ceremony, fine; abide by the rules of that religious community. Just because you get married in a church shouldn't entitle you to some special legal status. And just because you "can't" get married in a church shouldn't deprive you of legal status either. Equal rights under the law, and separation of church and state - these are core American values. How about protecting the values of democracy, not just "family values"? My humble opinions.

Good Question! But please understand my answer is meant to explain the difference between Religion and Secular life.

I don't believe God created LEGAL marriage contracts.
As a matter of fact Jesus said: "Render unto Caesar what is Caesar's, Render unto God what is God's."
This means in the matter of SECULAR issues, if we CHOOSE to live in a nation that regulates its population through secular laws, then as Christians we MUST adhere to those laws as good citizens.
Laws in this nation are SECULAR. We do NOT live in a theocracy.

Since, as a Secular nation we have a governing document which states "All Men are Created Equal" that means ALL! Not a select few, not those we deem worthy, not those who are white, rich or Christian.
As good citizens and good Christians it should be our priorty as Christians to UPHOLD these laws and promices to ALL citizens.
