Usually it a person who works in a position of promoting a product by being a face to the consumers. Say a radio station is doing a promotion, and they visit different bars, clubs, events where the DJ's broadcast live from; the promotions assistants would be walking around & talking to people about their radio station.

To add to what the other postee said, it is perhaps similar to a public relations assistant dealing with the masses and being one of the people at the forefront of an event.

Something in sales or marketing. But it could be a fancy way of saying "telemarketer"
