First you change the fraction(s) so that they have common denominators. In this problem you multiply 4 and 7 in the fraction 4/7 times 3 so that the denominator of 4/7 will equal 21, like the denominator of 4/21. Now the problem is 4/21 + 12/21 which is equal to 16/21, because once the fractions have the same denominator you just add the numerators.

Your first respondent is correct, but she didn't tell you how to get it... and that is more important than the answer

Remember that the denominators have to be the same for you to add them so you much change the 4/7 to an equal fraction, by multiplying numerator and denominator of that fraction by 3/3 (which is really 1 and 1 times anything remains itself, remember?)

4/21 + 3/3x4/7=
4/21 + 12/21 = 16/21 and this answer is not reducible.
