My mom trained me from birth to love and respect the Beatles, the Who, even the Yardbirds, but the Kinks I had to get into myself. Am I alone in my admaration of the band?

Sometimes I think I'm the only one. The Kinks are my favorite band.

I think the reason that they get so little credit is that they were the least cool and the least pretentious of all the great bands of their era. They sang songs about ordinary people struggling through life in their Village Greens and Shangri-Las, not sex, drugs and rock and roll. But what songs they were; Ray Davies was one of the greatest pop songwriters ever, who managed to be sophisticated as well as modest and restrained. At his best, he was every bit as good as Lennon or McCartney. The band was similarly subtle and great. They didn't show-off, but Kinks songs are full of great musical ideas. Most of the songs in their prime era are simply perfect. They were brilliantly constructed and yet performed with an endearing casualness and restraint. It's a shame that they go underrecognized. The modesty of the band's music meant that they never get the credit they deserve. At least you and I recognize that there is much more to The Kinks than just "You Really Got Me" and "Lola".

oh, no, you are NOT alone. The Kinks were utterly brilliant. If they had only made "Village Green Preservation Society" and "Arthur, Or The Rise and Fall of the British Empire," they would be remembered forever fondly, but albums like "Something Else by the Kinks" and songs like "Waterloo Sunset" and "Sunny Afternoon" marked them for greatness. And really, isn't "Muswell Hillbillies" one of the best albums, period, by anybody? No indeed, you are not alone. I listen to the Kinks far more than I ever listen to the Beatles, and they mean more to me than most of the British Invasion bands ever will. And Dave Davies totally kicked a$$ on guitar.

Fine choice the Kinks are great. The best though, in my opinion are The Small Faces. Superb band. Check them out.

Overrated? Maybe the Stones. I love 'em, however they are not as fine as each person says. Underrated? The Kinks, palms-down. They fairly do not get adequate credit score for his or her song, however above all no longer adequate for his or her amazing lyrics.
