i used to work at mcdonalds and i can tell you that if the meat in the trays have expired we have to pitch them. we could just reheat them but we get complaints about it sometimes. so we have to put patties on the clam grill, drop buns in the toaster, sometimes refill the condiments and get more wrappers. but it all depends on what time you stop at the restaurant. breakfast, lunch, supper and snack times are always busy. plus when we have specials like the 2 big macs or fish filets for $3 we have to put a ton of them on the waiting bin. dont forget about the drive-thru which gets backed up fast. during the rushes, the crew runs around like chickens with their heads cut off. theres usually 1 person on the grill, 1 on the buns, sometimes 4 people at the prep table, 2 at the drive thru, 3 at the front register and an expediter. you forget not everybody likes their sandwiches the same way. if your store is on a bus route, like when i was at burger king, things really got going.

The term "fast food" does not mean to portray the amount of time it must be served to you, rather the amount of time it requires to eat it, and the simplicity of doing this. A hamburger that only requires it to be held in one hand while driving, or talking on the phone is faster to eat than a restaurant meal that needs cultery and a table to eat it.

MacDonald's takes a long time even when they are not busy. Wendy's never takes long even when they are busy. But they do give out of baked potatoes.

Anything that serves through a window, whether it is hot or cold when you arrive at your destination, is consider a "fast" food because you do not go in and sit down and "WAIT".

You mean to say that 23 seconds isn't fast enough for you?!

Simple. Because it's faster than you making it yourself, even if you have to wait a few minutes.
