Cant really exactly answer your question unless I know where you are at. If you are in the north then no fish will work because you pond is not deep enough to let the fish live through the winter. Your pond has to be a foot deeper than your frost line. Other than that goldfish will work fine and even koi. If you are in a tropical place than any tropical fish should work providing that the live together ok. See other answers to cover this topic. Good luck!

250 gallons, not large enough for Koi,not deep enough for year round tropicals, unless you live in the deep South you will need to have a winter home for your fish. If the pond is heated(just enough to prevent freezing solid),you could keep Goldfish (probably not fancies),Comets in the pond year round. You would not require algae eaters if you kept the fish population low, avoided overfeeding like the plague, and used lots of floating plants to keep the algae from getting a foot hold. Algae eaters don't eat the kind of algae that turns the water a soupy green, they eat algae that's stuck to the side of the pond and on plants ,etc. Any way they are tropicals, the water should be at least 70 degrees F for them. Don't put tropicals in cold water.

Koi and goldfish do the best in ponds. You should also have some sort of filtration to keep the water clear. There are anti-algae chemicals on the market for ponds with fish as well.

Some cichlids and other fish work if you live in southern areas but for most tropical fish, they need a minimum of 75 and up to 82 degrees to remain healthy. Goldfish and koi can live in the pond throughout the winter as long as there is food added and an area where the ice is broken through to allow oxygen exchange.

The pond is approximately 250 gallons. For that size you could add 25 goldfish. Or..if you like koi, in apump filtered pond you could have 1 fish (they get up to 3 feet). In an elaborate filtered pond you could have 2 - 3 fish.

I'd start out with goldfish. They are a cheap cold-water fish. If they seem to do alright then you could move up to koi, which are basically a bigger version (not to mention, much more expensive) of goldfish. Have fun with it in any case. I don't know what to tell you about the algae eater, I'd ask a local dealer in ponds what they think.

kois are best for ponds.
you should also consider giving the pond some plants and filtration, and algae eaters are good idea to go too.
good luck with the pond

If you live in a warm enough area, algae eaters would be helpful. Gold fish would be your best bet. Koi are very resiliant and beautiful fish.

well ponds are tricky , first off you need to research what kind of things live in ponds in your area , and try to mimic those conditions, and keep the habitate as natural for them as possible with live plants, rocks, logs, and a good filtration system
