Are you so sure that we do, Is life linear or cyclic, Is our experience limited to our 5 senses, if so what sensory do we use when we dream?
If Einstein was right about E=mc2, and energy and matter are really interchangeable, different aspects of the same, then what decides when and how energy becomes matter and vice versa? If matter, composed of sub-atomic particles can exhibit characteristics of a wave, a quantum mechanical potential of being everywhere at once, then collapse that wave function and become a point in time/space just because it was observed, what does that say about what reality is, could it be possible that there really is no Out There, out there?

That's the only way we know. If you tell me this is pointless and you should stop, I will ask you "do you know any better way?" I only stop if you show me an alternative. Even if I stop, I will be waiting for something to happen. So this game goes on and on.

Is it possible to understand that you can just stop without looking for an alternative?
