I've just started hearing this lately. It's probably the worst grammatical mutation since 'my bad'.

Its been said for years now and the field is called the yard thats why.

This is baseball, not literature, and as with all professions has its own, evolving argot. There are probably more euphemisms for "hitting a home run" than for any two other aspects of the game. "Going yard" has been around for a long time.

The ball is hit out of the "yard" (dome, stadium).
and they have been saying this for a long time dude!
