I used a rusty gas tank from a junk yard once.It was full of rust. I took the plate off where the pump and fuel level sender goes then rinsed it out with gas several times. There was still some rust stuck inside so I put several large river gravels inside with more gas and sloshed it around a bunch more. That got most of it out.About a week after putting it on I had to change the fuel filter. Then once again about a month latter.I didn't have any problem with it after that.

You can try calling around to your local radiator repair shops--in my area, the shops offer a service where they flush the tank with an acid solution, clean it out and then coat it inside and out with a tough epoxy material to seal in any remaining rust. Usually runs about 100.00 but cheaper than a new tank especially if it's hard to find. Paul

You could try a commercial rust prevent er and make sure it is completely dry before putting fuel in
