Cool isn't cool anymore. I'm bothered, it seems like it's all about imitation now, back in the day, you had to be genuine to be cool. It seems cool is commercialized. Ugh!
Does anyone else feel this way?

No, Spike. That which we used to call 'cool' is still cool to us. What the kids call 'cool' these days isn't the same.
But the word still has the same essence that it did in the 1950s when I was a jazz drummer.
The kids these days don't have the depth of perception we did, and still do. Their world is a lot shallower.

I was never into being cool, back when I was young enough to be worried about such things. Now, I certainly am not trend setter.
Nowadays, you still have to be different to be cool, but anything that seems cool is almost immediately pounced upon by the media and clothing companies and made into product. By the time you can buy the latest cool stuff at your local Pac Sun store, it's already been franchised and sold and commercialized to the point that you have to be a poser to buy into it.
The length of time that something stays cool is getting shorter all the time, as the marketing geeks mine out the subcultures, looking for more crap to sell to the gullible kids. I guess the only way to be cool is to just be yourself, and not worry about it. This doesn't work, of course, but it sure saves you a lot of time and money, and if frees you from having to care about what all the fashion robots think.

I was never considered cool by anyone when I was younger. Now, going to university with 20 somethings, hanging out with them and keeping an open mind (and changing my opinion on a lot of things) some think I am 'cool'. Don't know why, don't care if they do.
Go figure... but I am pretty different.. a bit eccentric, and don't try to imitate anything or anyone. When I wanted to be 'cool' I wasn't, now that I don't care, some people think I am - bizarre.
Peace

I think its simply a different time. All of us over the age of 40 are of a different generation. What is cool to one generation, may not carry over to the next and each generation will have their own definition of cool.

I'm quite a bit over 40 and I define my own cool. You're old enough to be real. Genuine is still cool - sounds like you may be a little confused about your "true self."

If I cared what people thought of me then cool (kewl) might be important. Far too many people are too concerned by what someone might think of them or might say to them.
Too many people spend far too much energy in constructing an identity rather than just being themselves.
Some may consider me cool, others may not. Do I care? Not really.

Being cool is being yourself in spite of what the "in" thing is at the time. Being cool is being the unique person that you are even if the crowd doesnt get it. Its not about following what everyone else is doing. Be true to yourself.

You were alive in the 70s and your talking about being cool? Because that disco crap (which last only a few years thank god) was "cool"?
But your also viewing cool from the typical white MTV watching american perspective. Its not all like that.

not many 40 year olds care about being cool, but the ones that want to be cool could pull it off if they try
