How can I ease the transition?

Well, you broke the 28th cardinal rule of pet ownership.
Rule 28: It's perfectly acceptable to keep dogs with elephants & platipi ( plural, yanno ) But never.... I mean NEVER put a cat in the same room with a platypus.
Do I have to teach you everything? Geeeez!

This is normal for cats. Your elephant/platypus will come to accept their role in the household as they serve the well-being of the cats.
This is the natural order of things. Some cats will come to accept the elephant/platypus as 'large-cats' & companions for household pranks.
some cats will continue their haughty demeanor with a minor diminishing of hissing (tho it will NEVER go away entirely) ...
relax ... this is ok. it is very normal; the animals understand and accept it
My dog got me up this morning so that I could feed her hissing and spitting "big-sister CAT" ...
this is normal

tie a cat toy to the trunk and the cat will instantly fall in love with the elephant/platypus

Make sure your cats know they are just as special as the elephant/platypus.

take some catnip and spread it over the elephant/playpus.... not only will the cats cozy up, but the elephant/platypus will evolve much quicker....
by the way , what did you end up naming it?

cats take a lot of time to ease into transitions like this, just make sure they have their little hiding holes where they can go to be alone, and they'll come around when it suits them

They probably don't like the smell. Try bathing the elephantypus with a mixture of milk and tuna.
